Types of Therapy

I have been trained in many methods of psychotherapy. EMDR, cognitive behavioral therapy, hypnosis, couples therapy, gestalt therapy, and psychoanalysis.

I strongly believe in focused, goal oriented work and will tailor my treatment of each client according to their needs. This means that sometimes:

  • they need to talk
  • problem solve
  • create coping strategies
  • work hypnotically
  • search for insight to their problems
  • find ways of de-traumatizing and releasing the pain of old memories

There is an old saying. “If you only have a hammer, everything else looks like a nail.” I have many tools for your use.

Many potential clients ask me how long treatment will take. These are difficult economic times and we must all find ways of pulling through these times together. Developing an accurate assessment of my client, and collaborating in a treatment plan is the best way to speed the work along. I also know this is a “popular” question because of the managed care world. I used to participate with 22 insurance companies, but after becoming an expert in that field I respectfully disengaged from them as I could no longer respect their thinking. My experiences with them taught me that they are in the business of making money. I am in the business of providing the best care I can provide, in the shortest period of time.

When my clients ask me for a time frame I tell them that this question can be answered by both of us working as hard as we can together. Some people who call me want symptom relief. I respect that. I will work with you on symptomatic relief in a brief therapy mode.

I want clients to find solutions to their issues as quickly as possible, but I know that this will vary from person to person.

For instance the person who is willing to journal their thoughts and reactions after every session; use the cognitive behavioral strategies I teach them on a daily basis, is in a better spot to finish the work in less time. Clients must be invested in the work as active participants for the work go as quickly as possible. Active participation counts.

When my clients notice that they are functioning and feeling better living in the world they realize the insignificance of their original question about time. It is results and solutions that matter the most.

I have devoted my life to service to others. My therapeutic relationships are real, meaning that I answer questions and give opinions. These relationships also are of two equal partners on a journey together, each with agreed upon goals, and each with their separate tasks. Different people need different forms of psychotherapy. I will evaluate your problems with you, and either make suggestions, or listen to what kind of therapy you believe you need. If I can provide it, we will work on your problems in your modality of choice.
