We try to fix it or conceal it. Sometimes we believe that this body part makes us deformed. People may spend a lot of time worrying about this part of their body because it could make them feel like they are not as good as other people.

Teenage girls are often the most vulnerable because of peer group issues, wanting to be liked by their peers and by boys. But they are not the only ones. This problem plagues men and women alike.

Did you know…

…that studies surveying adult males found that between 45 – 63 percent complained of having too small a penis, while approximately 85% of their female partners were perfectly content with their partner’s size!

The list of concerns that boys, girls, men and women have is staggering. Is my nose to big for my face? Am I balding too quickly? My hair is too wavy; my acne makes me look ugly; my hips are too wide; my legs are too short, etc. The list goes on and on!

This preoccupation has become a national obsession. Advertisers of products these days are promoting things that make us look taller, thinner, or prettier. They are also using technology to alter the natural appearance of their models to fit the idea of perfection they have in their head. They need to realize that our physical appearance is far less important than who we are! It is sending the wrong message to young people and could contribute to them developing low self esteem.

What You Can Do…

The qualities we possess and how we are as people are what matter the most. The issue is what we believe about ourselves. When we have negative beliefs about who we are, we feel bad. Usually this is because we have had experiences that have become very painful memories. It is these memories that plague us, and keep us trying to improve how we look. Releasing the pain from past memories is a much better way of increasing our self esteem.

In 1989 Dr. Francine Shapiro, a clinical psychologist with a once in a lifetime mind, developed a psychotherapy methodology called, “Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing” or EMDR. It has been tested by many researchers and has the support of many professional organizations.

EMDR is the best form of psychotherapy I have ever been trained in, and I’m competent in many.

Get in touch with me and let’s start helping you release the pain for your past with this wonderful psychotherapy method.

Participants will learn:

The physical and emotional impact of trauma.

The eight phases of EMDR which emphasize preparing a client to become ready for the active trauma reprocessing phases of EMDR.

Methods of taking a sensitive “trauma informed” history.

When to work with traumatized clients on developing coping strategies for self-soothing before obtaining a complete history.

Identifying negative beliefs clients have about themselves which interfere with living a full life.

Identifying where and how these beliefs originated, before active trauma reprocessing.

Identifying those clients at greatest risk for dissociation.

Methods of safety in preparing a client to release painful affect.

Making an evaluation of maladaptive memories, usually beginning in childhood; activating memory components of visual cognitive, emotional and sensorimotor components.

How to recognize changes indicating productive reprocessing of painful memories.

Strategies to facilitate blocked reprocessing of painful memories.

Strategies of coping with your own activated painful memories during reprocessing.

Use of self as clinician in applying EMDR methodology.

Specialized procedures for clients with challenging problems to assist in reprocessing painful memories, releasing pain safely, so that the brain’s adaptive information processing abilities may spontaneously reprocess what were painful experiences, and now use the lessons of these experiences, for future growth and development.

Participants will learn many applications including:

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is Comprehensive Approach to Psychotherapy. It is evidence based and received an “A” rating from the International Society for Traumatic Stress Studies. It is an integrative methodology, which incorporates psychoanalytic, cognitive/behavioral, and relational/humanistic aspects into the cognitive neurosciences, including specifically information processing theory. It is designed to alleviate the suffering of many problems people have ranging from severe problems in living (heartbreaks, failing at work related issues, to the most severe traumas imaginable, such as survivors of sexual, emotional, physical forms of abuse (including clergy abuse), complex PTSD, and pathological forms of dissociative disorders.

The very definition of trauma in information processing terms is any event or experience that the brain’s information processing abilities are unable to encode in an adaptive manner. It is these experiences that are maladaptively encoded and activated when experiences in living implicitly or explicitly activate these memories. This is the experiential basis for internal problems people face in life which may cause behavioral problems, and symptomatic conditions such as anxiety and depression.

According to the EMDR International Association guidelines participants are required to have at least 5 hours of consultation in between Parts One and Two, and 5 hours of consultation after Part Two to complete their BASIC training. The rationale is to consolidate basic training into the daily practice of psychotherapy. These consultation hours may be obtained through individual or group sessions; in person or by telephone.

These are additional fees for these 10 hours, but they will be greatly reduced for participants of Mark’s training. (For instance an individual 60 minute hour of consultation may run as much as $150; $75 for group consultations.) Consultations by Mark (and some other Approved Consultants in EMDR) may run as low as $60 an hour for individual consultations, and $30 an hour for group consultations.

In addition Mark will be running Advanced Seminars on a number of issues such as:

Intersubjectivity (Transference and Countertransference) in EMDR

Attachment Issues in EMDR

EMDR and Dissociation.

Advanced Instruction in Traumatology

Issues in the Neurosciences and EMDR

Advanced Interventions During EMDR Preparation and Reprocessing Phases

Advanced Seminars in Specialty Areas of EMDR.

Participants from Mark’s Training will be given a discount of 50% off the tuition from these advanced seminars.

**Students in graduate programs may attend at reduced fees, but will not be given Certificates of Completion. The rationale is that they have not had sufficient years of clinical experience in order to competently apply EMDR methodology. They may apply for a Certificate of Completion after obtaining their licenses and passing specific requirements proving competence in clinical practice.**

Many have been happy with how their semester went. Many aren’t:

Some may be perfectionists; having unrelenting standards; not recognizing achievements.

Some are trying to live up to their parent’s high expectations.

Such anxiety & depression can lead to a vicious cycle of academic neglect, drug & alcohol abuse, parental & social conflict, and sometimes worse.

Many parents try to help:

Did they spend enough time studying?

Was there something in the course material that was too challenging, or too embarrassed to tell you?

Did they spend too much time with extra-curricular activities, e.g. clubs, parties, etc..

Parents may suggest some guidelines, such as, sufficient time for studying, organize your notes, summarize notes, etc.

Suggesting a student tutor or summer courses.

This may not be enough. Parents can find themselves nagging their children:

This can cause rebellion and opposition.

Many parents’ self-esteem is mixed up with the child’s performance; if their children don’t do well, it can lead to parents and or children:

Getting depressed

Becoming anxious

Parent/child fighting

What can family & friends do beyond nagging, or suggesting academic solutions?

Your family & friends may not implement your useful suggestions because there may be underlying psychological issues (such as being a perfectionist, ADD/ADHD, or low self-esteem) which are inhibiting them.

Here’s how you can help:

FOR STUDENTS, HERE ARE ACTIONS YOU CAN TAKE TO HELP RELIEVE ANXIETY OR DEPRESSION:

Give yourself a break.

Understand that an A- is still very good, and is not the end of the world

Allow more time for studying and make time for study breaks

Give yourself a mental reward. When you have accomplished something, make sure to tell yourself that you did good

“I realize you’re trying and not succeeding, is there something holding you back? Let’s talk.”

“You’re doing ok. But it seems like you’re always thinking that you’re not good enough… Why do you think that way?”

If you can’t get a good enough understanding or come to mutual solutions through conversation, then suggest a professional, like myself.

If you’re a friend of the family, you can do something like, “I read a quick article by Mark Dworkin, a psychotherapist, who works with students. You should e-mail him/her your concerns.”
