College Students in Today’s Job Market
Picture this: You’ve just finished another semester at college, which consisted of you galavanting around Europe for 4 months, “studying”, and soaking up the incredible culture that this new world has offer. Sounds tough, right? Well, that’s not the hard part at all. It’s finding a job once you find yourself home, and completely devoid of funds, and therefore fun.
With the ever increasing price of gas and the ever decreasing rate of employment, it’s quite difficult for college students to muster the courage to face the inevitable rejection of today’s job market. After browsing cragislist for hours a day, you find that years of experience are required to wait tables at a diner, that no one will hire students only available for the summer, and that most jobs listed get snatched up before the virtual ink dries on the ad. Looking for a job is a brutally discouraging task for college students, but at the same time, maybe we need this harsh reality to prepare us for the world we will soon face when the cord between us and our parents is cut once and for all.
It is an extremely gratifying feeling to be making your own money as a young adult. To have a wallet full of hard earned cash can only promote further motivation and desired independence in the minds of students. In some cases, folding clothes may seem appealing in order to afford a tank of gas or a night out with friends; to feel a bit more grown up. Personally, scooping ices and bagging groceries served this purpose during my high school days, but what about those nearing the end of their college careers? Something substantial to put on a resume would be an incredibly valuable change of pace, or perhaps a paid internship. One can only dream of a rare opportunity like this, but beggars certainly cannot be choosers.
What are your thoughts on today’s job market for people just beginning to enter it? Are you experiencing similar difficulties?
